A Note From Kerry...Your Guide To Greeness

I am proud to be Green Plan-It’s main eco-educator. I grew up in
Calgary, Alberta and as a child spent a significant amount of time
exploring local natural areas, saving drowning worms, bringing home
stray dogs and turning the tap off when brushing my off-pearly whites.
During my post secondary years, I hiked and backpacked throughout
Canada, the United States, Great Britain and the Mediterranean
making
sure to “take only memories” (and some really cool pics). I also
worked with emotionally challenged youth coordinating summer programs
which allowed me to take them camping, hiking, climbing and exploring
Kananaskis Country. Making connections with nature significantly
reduced the daily stress and turmoil these children had endured. In
my program development, I greatly emphasized that in learning about
our planet’s offerings and enjoying the outdoors we need to be more
accountable in protecting earth's valuable resources.
After completing my Education Degree I worked for the Calgary Board of
Education for nearly a decade. (That’s like 50 years in teacher
years!!) I ran numerous green clubs and initiated recycling programs
at two Calgary elementary schools. Through the SEEDS Foundation of
Canada we completed 100 environmental actions helping to achieve Green
School Status at one school and both Green and Jade Status (250
actions and projects) at another school.
Throughout my years of teaching I implemented many off-site trips that
integrated the curriculum with both environmental and global awareness
activities. I very much believe that kids learn so much from nature
and experiential opportunities. My students visited such places as
the Camp Chief Hector Outdoor School Program, Inglewood Bird Sanctuary
School, Frank Lake Wetland, Cross Conservation Area, Fish Creek and
Nose Hill Parks, Recycling Facilities, Landfills and many other areas
that connected classroom content to the more tangible, hands-on
learning beyond the classroom walls.
Currently, I am raising two "littler", green Kaufmans with my husband, teaching Green Plan-It courses and continuing my education surrounding children's health and environmental, global and ethically based issues and ideas. I am a graduate of The Clean Calgary Association's EcoLogic 201 and Master Bow Steward Courses. I have also played a role in their Healthy Homes Program visiting Calgarians' homes and helping them to understand the links between a healthy home environment and the positive effects that has on their families health and well being and the outside environment.
I have made several appearances on City TV - Breakfast Television tackling the topics of plastics, personal care products, green cleaning and safe sunscreens. I also have appeared on CBC - Living Calgary, speaking on greening your kitchen, nursery and bathrooms.
Through Green Plan-It's information sessions I hope to educate participants and increase their awareness surrounding current issues related to the planet and how to create healthy environments. I provide facts, tips, product information and resources that contribute to making everyone's daily lifestyle choices more informed, less toxic, healthier, more globally and ethically aware and a bit less carbon footprint-y.
